Dauber. Poem by John Masefield. A favourite long narrative.

The lad signed up

Three years assured

In Pacific seas

Merchant trade endured.

And he brought his kit

Paints and brushes too.

For when seas told stories

Immense visions too.

He would catch them all

Storms that

Tore the guts

Some men overboard

Calling for lifeboats.

Dauber manhood gained

And some friends

For sure.

With their meals gulped down

And their risks endured.
